What is cardiomyopathy?

Cardiomyopathy (CM) is a chronic disease of the heart muscle. There are three types of CM: dilated (enlarged), hypertrophic (thickened), and restrictive (rigid). CM affects the heart's ability to pump and deliver blood to the rest of the body. Common symptoms are breathlessness and swelling of the legs. People with CM are often at risk of dangerous forms of irregular heart beats and sudden cardiac death.
